Install a programmable thermostat - These will automatically regulate the temperature in your home or office so little energy is wasted (e.g., higher temperature while you are awake and lower temperature during times you're often not around).
Keep heating vents unobstructed - If you have a forced hot air system, it is important vents are not blocked by furniture, curtains, and other obstructions.
Close your chimney damper - Heat is often lost through an open chimney. If the fireplace is being used, allow the fire to go out completely before closing the damper.
Dress warmly - Wear warm clothing and use blankets, as you will be able to keep the thermostat a few degrees lower without getting so cold!
Keep filters clean - Forced hot-air furnace filters trap dust and other airborne particles, and need to be replaced or cleaned regularly. When filters become clogged, your system has to work harder to create heat, causing higher utility bills and shortening the life of the unit.
Get a Tune Up - It is recommended your heating system is cleaned, inspected, and adjusted each year for maximum performance. Periodic tune-ups on your system ensure it is running at peak efficiciency and the life of the system is prolonged.
Install a new furnace - Furnaces today are made to provide maximum energy efficiency. If you have a furnace that is 10+ years old, which is very inefficient and expensive to operate, consider a new high efficiency system. This will help reduce your utility bills a great deal! |
