Warmer weather is finally arriving here in Rhode Island, and before you know it, the oppressive hug of humid summer heat will hit Providence. Is your air conditioning system ready? Spring is the perfect time for HVAC maintenance to ensure reliable, high-efficiency comfort all season long.
A little preventative maintenance now can help you avoid expensive fixes, reduce your energy bills, and keep your home comfortable when the temperatures climb. Since 1989, CARJON has helped Rhode Island homeowners ensure their air conditioning systems run smoothly and keep them comfortable, and we want to help you start the cooling season off right.
Why Spring AC Maintenance Is Essential
Your cooling system sits dormant all winter, and debris and dust can cause electrical issues that go unnoticed until it's too late. Skipping a spring check-up or tune-up means you risk:
Breakdowns: Less risk of system breakdown right when you need it most.
High and Rising Energy Bills: An inefficient system has to run constantly to keep up, and this slow electrical leak will only grow, leading to higher bills each month.
Shortened AC Lifespan: Regular service ensures system longevity and long-term value.
Your 3-Step DIY Spring AC Checklist
Before you rely on a professional air conditioning service, there are a few simple DIY steps you can take to prepare your system and check for obvious issues.
Step 1: Replace Your Air Filter
This is the single most important maintenance step any homeowner can take. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work harder, which wastes energy and harms indoor air quality.
Locate your filter (usually near the air handler or furnace).
Replace it with a fresh one. We recommend checking or replacing your filter every 30–60 days, especially during heavy-use months.
Step 2: Clear Debris Around the Condenser Unit
The large metal box sitting outside your home is the condenser. It needs clear access to the surrounding air to dissipate heat efficiently.
Clear away leaves, grass clippings, weeds, and any other debris that has accumulated over the winter.
Ensure there are at least two to three feet of clear space around the unit on all sides for proper airflow.
Step 3: Test the System Early
On a mild spring day, test your AC before the heat arrives.
Switch your thermostat mode from Heat/Off to Cool.
Set the thermostat to a temperature at least five degrees lower than the current indoor temperature.
Wait about 5-10 minutes. You should hear the outside unit turn on, and cool air should start coming out of your vents.
If the system won’t turn on, or if the air is just blowing but not cold, call CARJON for professional help.
Go Beyond DIY: Why a Professional Tune-Up Matters
While your DIY checklist is a great start, it doesn’t cover the critical mechanical and electrical components that only a professional can inspect. A springtime tune-up is a proactive maintenance investment that prevents major problems later.
At CARJON, our technicians perform a full 16-point AC maintenance inspection that includes checking refrigerant levels, cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils, tightening electrical connections, and ensuring all controls and safety devices are working correctly. This is the only way to guarantee your system operates at peak efficiency from the first sweltering day of summer.
Protect Your Investment with a Residential Maintenance Agreement
The absolute best way to ensure maximum comfort and energy savings this summer, and year-round, is with our Residential Maintenance Agreement.
A maintenance agreement ensures you receive both a heating and cooling tune-up annually. It gives you peace of mind that your reliable, high-efficiency equipment is running as it should, helping you avoid costly AC repair and premature system replacement.
When you partner with CARJON, you are choosing a neighbor. We are still family-owned and serving Rhode Island since 1989, and our expert service is always focused on your long-term comfort and value.
