Your 3-Step Emergency AC Troubleshooting Checklist
When your cooling system isn’t working, there are three key areas to check first that don't require calling a professional for AC or mini split repair.
1. Check Your Thermostat Settings and Batteries
The simplest issues are often the culprits. Ensure your thermostat is set to Cool mode, and that the temperature setting is at least five degrees lower than the current indoor temperature. If your thermostat is programmable or utilizes batteries, check to make sure the batteries are fresh and that the programmable settings are bypassed.
2. Check Your Circuit Breaker
Your AC system, including the blower and compressor, relies on electricity. A power surge or a brief overload can trip the dedicated circuit breaker.
- Locate your electrical panel.
- If the breaker controlling your HVAC unit is flipped, flip it fully to the OFF position, and then back to ON.
*Important: If the breaker immediately trips again, do not keep resetting it. This indicates a serious electrical fault, and you should call a professional immediately.
3. Inspect Airflow and the Outdoor Unit
Restricted airflow is a major cause of failure and poor performance.
- Air Filter: A dirty or clogged air filter restricts airflow, which makes your system work harder and can even cause the indoor coil to freeze, leading to system shutdown. Check your filter and replace it if it’s visibly dark or clogged.
- Outdoor Condenser: The large unit outside needs clear space to expel heat. Make sure there are no leaves, grass clippings, or debris piled up around the condenser. Maintain 2–3 feet of clear space on all sides.
DIY Checks Done and Still No AC? It’s Time to Call CARJON
If you’ve completed this checklist and your air conditioner is still not blowing cold air, making loud noises, or won’t turn on at all, the issue is likely a mechanical failure that requires immediate attention from an expert. This could involve anything from a dangerous refrigerant leak to a broken fan motor or a control board failure.
